Premise:
My housing from September 2018 forward didn't come with a desk, so it made getting work done in my room a bit more challenging. I didn't have room in this new place for a desk; therefore, I needed an alternative. The market research I did pointed me towards making a lap desk that I could use on the couch that is in my current room.
Construction:
The lap desk was designed with design cues taken from a study of lap desks on Amazon and Ebay. The material is a large heavy duty cardboard box purchased from home depot. The mid section of the flatten box was the prime "slab" of material that forms that flat surface of the lap desk. The two largest pieces of the box were glued on top of each other using superglue. The main slab was trimmed to the dimensions of roughly a 18" x 16" rectangle. Furthermore, the lap desk features a port in the top left corner for cables to save desk space, and a utility slot for holding phones or tablets is located on the top right of the desk. Lastly, the padding underneath is regular density foam that was left undecorated and glued to the cardboard using E6000 glue as standard super glue is known to dissolve foam.
Criticism:
The main criticism of this lap desk is that I did not include a "stop" barrier at the bottom of the work space. The lap desk works at the angle of how one sits, so sometimes my mouse will slide down the work surface towards my midsection. A small wall less than 0.25" high on the bottom of the lap desk would easily remedy this issue.
