To better understand why I keep it as a memory in my professional life; it helps to understand what airsoft is and what I did with the group. The image below is a link to the website I created for it.
What is Airsoft?
Airsoft is a competitive sport that seeks to mimic warfare. It can take the form of skirmishes, historical re-enactment, and military simulation. As opposed to it's cousin, paintball, airsoft does not use paint. Rather, it uses tiny plastic beads that are fired from realistic weapons constructed from plastic, metal, or both. Due to the lack of visible markers, and inspiration from military warfare, airsoft requires the use of self-regulated honor systems and camaraderie in order to be performed correctly.
My Involvement
After the founder left the group, the rest of the members and I (10 total) decided that we would continue on with the group under a new name (Grove Street Airsoft). From that point, we contemplated who would be in charge of organizing. After 1 month of discussion, I was picked to be the one to organize the events after everyone else gave their reasons on why they couldn't organize. Over the course of the next year; I grew the membership base from 10 to 40+ people, acquired two smaller local airsoft groups, and negotiated relationships with other large area groups. Furthermore, I scheduled, organized, and led events on a weekly basis. Lastly, I obtained donors for money and land to eliminate membership and entrance costs for attendees. I still consider this to be one of the best practices in leadership I've experienced since leaving high school.
